Mayumi<\/span> is a 16-year old teenager from Rizal Province. She discovered her love for poetry during a summer creative writing workshop<\/span> some years back. As a music student of many years, she saw that poetry was like music when words would rhythmically glide off one\u2019s tongue when read or spoken. By Phillipine editorial staff <\/p>\n <\/p>\n This is my personal adaptation of the short story, \u201cThe Dance\u201d<\/span> (pp. 82-90) from the book, \u201cThe Shoemaker\u2019s Daughter\u201d<\/span>, written by my aunt, Ms. Sarah Fernando Lumba<\/span>.<\/p>\n She felt the sand beneath her feet From there she took her rest.
\nThe poem she wrote is her take on a chapter from the book, The Shoemaker\u2019s Daughter, entitled: \u201cThe Dance\u201d (pp 82-90). It is a story that features the pangalay,<\/span> an indigenous dance in Mindanao. Similar to a favorite book of hers, The Little Prince<\/span>, she says each time rereads it, she understands and discovers something new. She has recently reread \u201cThe Dance,\u201d and understood it differently this time. She was so moved that she decided to do a tribute to it.<\/p>\n

\n\nAs she traced the figure eight Into the sky,
\nAs she swayed her hips From side to side.
\nAs her hair fell behind her back, Her eyes closed.<\/p>\n
\nShe felt the sun shine on her face
\nShe smelled the sea
\nShe heard the waves.
\nShe smiled.<\/p>\n
\nFrom there she walked, hand in hand With her loved one.
\nInto the light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
