Why wait until 2030 to rid the world of hunger?

We have the capacity, that is, the resources, to feed the world, but not the political will to do so.

Our US Teens editorial team interviewed Emery Koenig, who worked for 38 years for Cargill Inc., a multinational company with 155,000 employees in 70 countries, a world leader in the food industry.

I have spent most of my career managing Cargill’s business in global agri-food trade. I spent a lot of time in Africa and the Middle East. My duties include working with governments to help them better understand how to feed the world today and with the 9 billion people who will inhabit it in 2050.

The problem is twofold. There are 850 million people (1 in 9) who consume less than 2000 calories per day and go hungry. Then there is the growing problem of obesity. And the world clearly has the ability to feed everyone. 35-40% of the 850millions of hungry people are in India, a grain exporter. Millions of them are in China, which has $ 3.5 trillion in reserve.
